World
Voyage Campaign
I've killed for less that that.
(The favorite line of my best friend's character).
I still remember my first playing session. My mentor
was running this game called
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons for some of his college students.
So me and my best
buddy (his son) joined up. We rolled characters. I thought that
was fun and was going to call it an evening. Then the real action
started.
The
only images I can remember from the first game were my halfling
character running from kobolds and dodging between and through the
legs of my fleeing companions. I also remember something about a
medusa. My mind opened to a sense of wonder that night that never
died but continued to grow with each new adventure and version of
D&D. I also rmember having a huge headache after my first session
because I was trying to mentally visualize every single thing that
was happening. It was almost too much for my cromagnon mind.
The campaign was a mishmash of adventures, interparty
squabbles and even sporting events. My mentor would always find
some way to have sports adventures during the olympics or seasonal
playoff real world events. We had swimming contests, down hill skiing
complete with high speed combat with sword and bow! We had rowing
contests in shark infested waters and obsticle courses that were
leathal but exillerating. Some how it all worked and we had a grand
time.
Then one day my mentor got a beautiful fantasy art
book detailing a ship that sailed around a mythical earth. We all
got on board a ship and then sailed around the world. At the beginning
of every session, my mentor would show us the next picture in the
book and our adventure would revolve around that. It was very creative,
seldom had consitancy but it was fun.
My character died at the hands of a fellow party member
Grunk, the gnome assasin, may he rot in the Nine Hells! :)
